Observations from an officer-involved shooting
People hold police officers responsible for a wide range of societal ills because police are the most visible, authorized representatives of government power in daily life, positioned at the intersection of crime, mental health, and social conflict.
When other social systems (such as education, healthcare, or housing) fail, police are often the default, "one-size-fits-all" response, leading to public blame when those complex issues are not solved or are escalated.
😳
I’m just sayin’ — and it’s not exactly fair.
👇
Think about it.
Here’s the group we call upon when things are elevated— when we have a problem we can’t solve. An accident. A break in. A crime. A dilemma…
And they show up, every single time…
… they take the “worst” of situations (bringing their best), and make the exchange— our bad for their best.
🛡️
I asked a friend who spent 10 years in the coast guard AND another 6 as a police officer to talk to me about an officer involved shooting…
… a time when he got called to “bring his best” to a bad situation.
